Many newly elected Minnesota legislators got poor ratings from the gun-extremist lobby. These legislators have refused to sign onto the gun-extremist agenda, which opposes background checks before gun purchases and advocates other bills broadly opposed by law enforcement, including the infamous "Shoot First" bill.

Protect Minnesota is saddened by the loss of 12 innocent people in last night's shooting at a Colorado movie theater. At least 38 are reported to have been injured in the shooting. Protect Minnesota stands for the prevention of gun injuries and deaths and regrets that there are too many victims of mass shootings. This is the second mass shooting this week in America. In Alabama earlier this week, a shooter entered a bar and shot and injured 17 people. Please hold the families and friends of these latest shooting victims in your hearts and also those who were injured.

Trayvon Martin, a 17-year-old African-American boy carrying Skittles, was shot and killed in a Florida gated community by a "neighborhood watch" volunteer with a concealed handgun. The killer, George Zimmerman, had called and reported Martin as "suspicious" and was told by police not to follow Martin. But Zimmerman did anyway, got out of his car, and a scuffle ensued between Zimmerman and the boy he outweighed by nearly 100 pounds.
