Trayvon Martin, a 17-year-old African-American boy carrying Skittles, was shot and killed in a Florida gated community by a "neighborhood watch" volunteer with a concealed handgun. The killer, George Zimmerman, had called and reported Martin as "suspicious" and was told by police not to follow Martin. But Zimmerman did anyway, got out of his car, and a scuffle ensued between Zimmerman and the boy he outweighed by nearly 100 pounds. When police arrived, Martin was dead, and Zimmerman claimed "self-defense." Under Florida's Shoot First law, Zimmerman couldn't be arrested -- and he hasn't been.
